There are two old schooners in the Sheepscot Bay. Their names are the Hesper and the Luther Little. These two ships are two of the last four masted ships built in New England. The two ships came to Wiscasset in 1932 when Frank W. Winter bought them for $600.00 a piece. He wanted to repair and use them to ship lumber to Boston, Massachusetts and return with coal. A watchman lived on the Luther Little and did some painting and fixing up until 1936. Mr.Winter passed on before his plan could come true.
In 1978, "The Friends of the Wiscasset Schooners" formed to repair the ships but they never got to do anything about the ships. Over the years, fires and weather damaged the ships. In 1979, "The Friends" interviewed one of the crew members of the Hesper. His name was Carl Edstrom. He was 80 years old. He told them stories about the cargo and crew. As time goes, so do the old ships. A piece of history is sinking into our mud flats. They are one of our most famous landmarks in Wiscasset and soon they will be gone forever.
