Wood-Foote House, 1810
By

Abby

The construction on this beautiful Federal Style house began in 1810, and it was interrupted by the war of 1812 . It was completed fourteen years later for Major Abiel Wood Jr., the son of General Abiel Wood. He built it for his wife who never enjoyed it because she died of spotted fever. The house was sold in 1883 to Freeman Parker Erskine. It was bought back twenty-five years later by Erastus Foote, Jr., Woods' great grandson.

It is now owned by Mr.Foote's great niece. This house is a fine example of the Federal style period. A Federal style building has two windows on either side of the front door and five windows above the door. It is a flat board house with three thick walls supporting it. The walls are made of wood, brick, and plaster. It is one of the most beautiful homes in Wiscasset, Maine. We all liked looking at this house. As you can see, they are working on fixing it up this winter.
