The "Twin Villages"
Damariscotta and Newcastle, the "Twin Villages" are ideally
located near the head of the Damariscotta River, twelve miles from the
ocean. These typical New England towns are the trading center for Lincoln
County. Many excellent and modern stores and speciality shops offer facilities
and services to meet every need.
A riverfront municipal parking area makes shopping convenient.
A boatyard still carries on the tradition of ship building, and visiting
craft will find dock space at the municipal landing and boat ramp, with
moorings available from the Harbor Master.
The villages boast splendid churches, fine schools,
a modern class A hospital and a public library. Both towns were included
in the Pemaquid Patent of 1629 and contain many beautiful houses and buildings
of the Colonial period. A unique feature of interest is the oyster shell
heaps along the river, which record Indian gatherings through untold centuries.
