It's an Electric Notebook

No, what does it really look like.

I've kept a notebook for years. I used it mostly for work so I can keep track of what I've done and what I need to do. Most of my work is on a computer now so I wrote a program to emulate my paper notebook. I also added a calendar and a list manager. I've found it very handy, for even more than work. Maybe you will too.

Since putting this out I've gotten some great feedback and ideas from users. Which leads to new versions and new functionality.

Version 1.1 added backup and synchronization of 2 notebooks, time stamps and a handy text formatting option.

Version 1.2 adds a summary window for each day, enhanced searching, printing and the all new Garden Calculator.

Version 1.3 brings Editing previous days; Password protection; Right mouse button menu; Even more enhancements on searching and other useful features. Show me more of Version 1.3

That all sounds good but what does it look like? Check out some screen shots of the program!

It's written for Windows '95 and Window's NT. It's in a 803K zip file which you can download, unzip and run setup to install. If you already are using notebook please backup up the current notebook directory and install over your previous version. If you synchronize notebooks be sure to update all your versions.

Notebooks latest incarnation is available here, notebook.zip, version 1.3.

That's the gist of getting a new notebook.

Now for a little proselytizing....

Notebook's goal is to emulate a paper research notebook. When you have ideas, make contacts or just plain work on something you jot it down in the notebook. If someone sends you a URL they think you might be interested in, but you don't have time to look at it right now, you paste it in the notebook. It's an information manager of sorts but there are no categories. If you can afford the luxury of categorizing all the information which passes by each day then notebook probably isn't the right program for you. On the other hand if you like the idea of a Personal Valet for storing whatever sparks an interest, it might be just the thing.

Once you have a body of information accumulated you can use search and scrolling to find what you're looking for. This might be as concrete as a URL or it might be a vague notion of something useful which you want to rekindle. One really, really useful application is if you're stuck in Dilbert land doing your own "yearly evaluation". You've probably done a lot and you should make sure they know it!

Notebook is distributed as shareware. It is a fully functioning version with no expiration date, just a nag window after 30 days. The idea is you try the software out and if you like it then you'll buy it. If you decide to keep the program you can get the registration specifics through the help system. The price is $20.

ZDNet gave version 1.2 a 4 star rating. Read their review !
