At then end of the 80's, the 1980's not mine, I took a lesson offered by L.L. Bean himself at Lost Valley in Auburn, Maine. It was for Telemark skiing. I'd been a downhill skier and was looking for "adventure". I got in the telemark position, rolled my knee inward, made the turn and was hooked. I haven't looked back since. Although I must admit I am a little envious of the snowboarders. Well right up until they have to get off the lift. Three years ago I took the plunge and went high tech, with Scarpa plastic boots and release bindings. I got them down on Washington avenue in Portland at a Ski and Bike Shop. I paid a reasonable price and got some nice service, hence the plug. If you're a pinhead and you haven't taken the plunge I highly recommend it. It's a different world.
It's 1998 almost 1999, almost the mileneum. I've got a Burton Floater and Klicker bindings. Time marches on. It took a few days of pure misery, and I'm sure there are more than a few more in store. If you havn't tried Snowboarding don't wait (pick a soft day!). They say it's easier to learn that traditional downhill. It's not, it's just that you don't have a choice.
