PACKING UP YOUR FOOD!!!

  1. In short, zip lock bags are your friend. Meals should be broken down and organized according to breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack.
  2. Remove all unnecessary store packaging like cardboard and outer layers and repack using sandwich bags if possible. The goal is to have very little trash to manage, because we pack out everything we pack in.
  3. Measure everything you can and pre-pack. If oatmeal is the breakfast choice, then pre-measure the serving size and only use one serving per meal.
  4. Non-stick cookware is excellent and enables easy clean-up.
  5. The small "mess kit" size pots, pans and cups are really pretty useless. They are just not big enough to boil a decent amount of water. The tiny plastic cups can be used as a measuring device, but are also useless for drink. By the time you put hot chocolate into the cup there is barely any room left for water. Bring a big cup/mug for drinking.
  6. Soup spoons are way better than teaspoons for eating. If you don't need a fork, then don't bring one.
  7. Keep an eye on the weather for the duration of the trip. Hot and sunny means problems for items like cheese. Cool temperatures mean additional possibilities for bring easy to use perishables.
  8. Eat normal food. If you have never eaten jerky, but decide to bring lots of it as a snack item, then you may end up with stomach discomfort.
  9. Glass containers are dangerous and absolutely unnecessary.
  10. Food that gets runny when warm (peanut butter, cheese) must be in a container that is guaranteed leak proof.
  11. Practice cooking a meal at home before the trip.
