ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT FOR EACH
HIKER
checklist
CLOTHING
- rain gear--water proof pants and
jacket. Hood is necessary. The very inexpensive easy ripping suits
are unsafe.
- pile (fleece) or wool hat--This is a
must. Both materials insulate when wet.
- comfortable sturdy hiking boots--NOT
NEW
- 2 or 3 pairs wool or hiking socks--liner
socks (polypropylene or capilene are excellent.
- polypropylene/capilene top and bottom
underwear or other first layer long underwear. Cotton is not a
good fabric.
- wool or fleece pants
- lightweight long pants and/or wind
layer
- shorts
- extra underwear
- long sleeve shirt
- short sleeve shirts
- sweater or fleece jacket
- mittens or gloves (mittens are
better)
- bandanna(s)
- swim suit--optional
- lightweight shoes, sandals, or moccasins
for camp and/or stream crossings (Tevas are
perfect)
GEAR
- backpack--large size internal or
external frame
- Sleeping pad--CRITICAL--ensolite is
common and inexpensive.
- Sleeping bag--down, polar guard,
holofil, rated to twenty degrees.
- Personal first aid kit--prescriptions,
hygiene, toilet, basic first aid, moleskin. Leader will have group
first aid kit.
- Drinking cup--big enough for a large
hot drink.
- Toilet paper--one of the definite
essentials
- Water bottles--two quarts per person,
full at beginning of trip.
- Flashlight--lightweight, extra
batteries. Two small disposable ones are fine.
- Cook kit--pot, pan--unless group
cooking
- eating utensils--large size spoon to
double as stirring and eating fork, sharp knife
- waterproof matches or butane
lighter(s)
- sunglasses
- bug repellent--Deet based--Spring trip
only
- toiletries--toothbrush, toothpaste,
hygiene
