PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS


 

To compete for the $1,000,000 Design Prize. .

Your architectural firm must:

Research Tasks

In order to design a Cultural Center that meets ReCAP's goals
and win that $1,000,000
you will need to really get to know your region really well!


A number of Research Tasks will help you to do this.

Your firm will need to complete Research Tasks related to your Region in each of the following areas.

(Click on each of these topics to see the assigment that must be completed.)

Each Research Task has at least 3 parts:

  1. an Individual Assignment that requires Junior Partners to complete research/information gathering activities.
  2. a Group Assignment that requires the Firm to analyze the information that has been gathered by the junior partners, and
  3. a Design Assignment that requires the Firm to think about how the information can be used in their Cultural Center design.

Research Analysis Forms will be provided for each task. These forms require the Firm to answer 3 questions:

  • WHAT?-- What information has been gathered?
  • SO WHAT? -- What is important about what you have learned?
  • NOW WHAT? -- What are you going to do with the information?

These important records must be kept in a Presentation Portfolio.


Presentation Portfolio

To help you organize and analyze the information you gather,
and win that $1,000,000
your Firm must keep a Presentation Portfolio.

  • The Presentation Portfolio is a notebook divided into 8 sections. There will be a separate section for each of the Research Tasks and a section for preliminary design ideas.
  • As each Partner completes his/her individual work, it is to be checked by your Firm's Senior Partner and, in most cases, put in the Firm's Portfolio..
  • When the Firm has completed an analysis of the Junior Partners' work using the Research Analysis form, the first two sections of this form must also be put in the Portfolio..
  • As your Firm generates ideas for design components (the last section of Research Analysis Form), these will be put into the final section of your Portfolio. This section is also a place to collect images of traditional architecture from the Region.
  • This Portfolio must be handed in as part of the Firm's Presentation to the ReCAP Board of Directors.

Cultural Center Design

To Win That $1,000,000
your Firm must design a Culural Center to meet ReCAP's goals.

 

When the Research Tasks are completed, your Firm will consider all you have learned and create a design for a Cultural Center for your region.

  • The design you create must clearly represent your region and attempt to meet the goals of ReCAP. You'll need to refer back to these goals frequently.
  • Your Center may be a single buildingor a Complex with a variety of structures. Remember that Center must have spaces for at least the following:
    • A Natural and Cultural History Museum
    • An Exhibition Hall for an annual Cultural Fair
    • Space or spaces for such activities as:
      • Educational Programs and Cultural Exchanges
      • Performing Arts Events
      • Concerts
      • Trade Shows
      • Athletic Events
  • The Photo Gallery contains pictures of both traditional and modern architecture. These pictures may give you ideas that you can use in your design.
  • You must select a site for your Center that will best serve the goals of the project.
  • You must also create an appropriate name for your Cultural Center.

Cultural Center Model

To Win That $1,000,000
you must create a model of your proposed Cultural Center.

Once your Firm has decided on a design for a Cultural Center for your Region, you must build a MODEL of your proposed design..

  • Your model must fit within a square no larger than 2' X 2' and no smaller than 1' X 1'. (Check with your Senior Partner if you need an exception.) THE SCALE MUST BE ACCURATE.
  • Your model may be made of any material that you find suitable. The following is a partial list of materials that will be available. If you wish to use additional materials, you will need to provide them yourselves:
    • Light-weight cardboard
    • heavy-weight cardboard
    • construction paper
    • popsicle sticks
    • self-hardening clay (in small amounts)
  • A computer generated model will happily be accepted!
  • Your model will be evaluated according to the Cultural Center Design & Model Scoring Guide. Be sure to look at this guide for additional requirements.

Oral Presentation

To Win That $1,000,000
you must present your proposal to ReCAP's Board of Directors

Your Firm must present your design for the Regional Cultural Center to the ReCAP Board of Directors.

  • You must describe your Region using a digial Slideshow format.
  • You must present your model and explain:
    • Where the Center is located and why you selected this site.
    • the ways in which the design represents your Region,
    • the ways in which the design helps to meet ReCAP's goals.
  • You must present a Persuasive Argument to convince the Board that it should select your Firm's design.
  • Your presentation must be clear and well organized with all Junior Partners sharing in the responsibility.
  • The addition of costumes, music, foods, etc as examples of what one might see at your Cultural Center would add to your presentation and just might impress the ReCAP Board to help you Win That $1,000,000!!
  • Your presentation will be evaluated according to the Oral Presentation Scoring Guid. Be sure to look at this guide for additional requirements.

Slide Show Presentation

To Win That $1,000,000
your presentation to ReCAP must include a Slide Show.

As part of your presentation to the ReCAP Board of Directors, your Firm must provide a description of your region. This description must be in the form of a digital slide show.

  • Your slide show should briefly summarize the information you gathered and analyzed in the following areas:
    • Geography
    • History
    • Fiction
    • Folk Tales
    • Economics
    • Culture
    • Ecology
  • Your slide show must be well organized and present the most important information and ideas you have learned about your region. To help you do this, you must prepare an outline, or other form of graphic organizer, before you begin developing the actual slide show.
  • You may scan images, find them on the internet sites, or use some from the Photo Gallery. If you do use images from the Photo Gallery, make sure they are from your region.
  • Your slide show will be evaluated according to the Slide Show Scoring Guide. Be sure to look at this guid for additional requirements.

Persuasive Argument

To Win That $1,000,000
you must convince the members of the ReCAP Board that they should select your design.

Your firm must be able to explain why ReCAP should select your design for the Regional Cultural Center. The following steps must be taken as your Firm builds a strong argument:

  • Each Junior Partner must write a well-developed "Persuasive Essay" that argues in favor of your design.
  • Each Persuasive Essay must:
    • present a clear point of view
    • present a strong argument in a logical order
    • use convincing facts to support the argument
    • be approved by the Firm's Senior Partner
  • Once the individual essays are completed, the Firm must get together to consider all of the arguments presentated and make a decision about which will be the most effective in persuading ReCAP.
  • A Research Analysis Form is provided to assist you.
