Kerosene lamps were very popular in colonial times. They could be hung from the ceiling, attached to the wall or set on tables. Candles cost so much that they were used mostly by wealthy people. People often carried small kerosene lamps with them. A kerosene lamp had a bowl at the bottom to hold the kerosene. A wick brought the kerosene up to work the flame. A glass chimney protected the flame. People still use these lamps today.
