ABOUT OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

By Hallie

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. The distance from the sun is 36,000,000 miles.. The period of revolution is 88 days. The period of rotation is 59 days. The diameter of Mercury is 3,000 miles. Mercury does not have any moons.

The distance from the sun for Venus is 67 million miles. It takes 225 days for Venus to revolve around the sun. It takes 243 days for Venus to rotate a round the sun. The mass of Venus is 0.815. The diameter is 76,000 miles. Venus does not have any moons. Venus and Earth are twin planets.

Earth's distance from the sun is 93,000,000 miles. The length of a year is 365 days. The diameter of Earth is 79,00 miles. The length of a day is 23 hours and 59 minutes. The temperature is 60 degrees. Earth has one moon.

Mars is 142,000,000 miles from the sun. A year lasts 678 days on Mars. The diameter of Mars is 42,00 miles. A complete day on Mars is 24 Hours and 37 minutes. The surface temperature is 63 degrees during the day time it is below 180 degrees at night. The distance from the sun to Jupiter is 486,000,000 miles. A year on Jupiter is 11.86 days long. The diameter of Jupiter is 89,000 miles. A day on Jupiter is 9 hours and 50 minutes. The surface temperature is -240 degrees. There are 17 known moons.

The distance from the sun to Saturn is 892,000,000 miles. The length of a year is 29.45 days long. The diameter of Saturn 75,000 miles. The mass of Saturn is 95.2. Saturn has 22 known moons. Saturn's weight is 160 pounds. Saturn is the only planet lighter than water.

Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. It is 1,800,000,000 miles from the sun. It takes 84.013 Earth years for Uranus to make 1 complete revolution around the sun. It's period of rotation is 17. 24 hours a day. The diameter of Uranus is 31,750 miles. That is almost 4 times the diameter of Earth. Uranus has only 3 moons.

Neptune is the ninth planet from the sun until 1999. That is because of Pluto's orbit goes in to Neptune's orbit. The temperature at night time is 250 degrees C. When scientists found Neptune it look like a star but after 2 years of research they found out that Neptune was a planet. Neptune has 8 moons.

Pluto is 3,700,000,000 miles away from the sun. Pluto has a diameter of 1,416 miles long. Pluto has 1 moon. It is very cold on Pluto because of it's distance from the sun. If you had a telescope and you looked north you would see a tiny dot of blue. That is Pluto. Pluto is the smallest planet in our solar system.

The Solar System

By Kyle P.

There are nine planets, 66 moons, and millions of asteroids and comets circling the sun that make up our Solar System. The sun is the most important body in our Universe. It supplies each planet with heat and light. The word planet comes from a Greek word meaning wanderer. (I got this information from a book on planets.)
