In order to establish baseline data about bullying for Maine the MPAB, in collaboration with the Muskie Institute and the University of Southern Maine, conducted a survey on bullying in grade three in Maine elementary schools during February 1999.

One hundred sixty-five schools indicated an interest in participating in the survey. The surveys were collected, scored and assessed by the Muskie Institute and U.S.M. The results of this survey will be released in the Fall of 1999 and posted on this page.

The purpose of this survey is to help schools make a brief assessment about the following:

A. The nature and extent to which bullying is occurring in a school;

B. How children have reacted to bullying at school and what have been the consequences for their feelings of safety and well-being;

C. Whether they have informed others and to what outcomes;

D. Students' perceptions of their own aggressive behaviors at school;

E. Gender differences regarding all of the above.

This is an important project which may help document the need for more assistance in the prevention / intervention of aggressive behaviors in the early grades.

Example of the Grade 3 Survey.
