The Cast Iron Smoothbore Cannon

by Eva & Amber

Sitting in front of the Fire House in Wiscasset, Maine is a beautiful Cast Iron Smoothbore six pound cannon.

This cannon is 136 years old. It has been in Wiscasset for all of these years. It was made in 1861 by the Cyrus Algers Foundry of South Boston.

The cannon was in the Civil War period. It could have been used on boats or on land.

The cannon was stored in the basement of the Wiscasset Library for 30 years. Mr. Chester, a nice friendly man from Wiscasset, came into our class and talked about the cannon and gave us information that we wrote about in our web page.
