The Sunken Garden

By Eva

The Sunken Garden is a beautiful and historical place on Maine Street in Wiscasset. Thousands of visitors drive by it each summer on their way up and down the coast of Maine.

The Whittier Tavern, the first house built on this piece of land, was built in 1766. It was destroyed by fire on Sunday July 16, 1843. A new house was built in 1845. It was called the Hilton House.

The Hilton House was also burned. The massive cellar walls are the only remains. Frances A. Sortwell turned these walls into a lovely garden, and then gave it to the Town of Wiscasset.

To learn more about Mrs. Sortwell and the Nichles Sortwell house go to The Nichles Sortwell. The beautiful flowers and trees are enjoyed by everybody.
