PROJECT CLIMBERS

Project CLIMBERS has been developing at the W.P.S. since 1989. Each year it has broadened and become more integrated into the culture of the Primary School. It has been a collaborative effort involving Guidance, Physical Education, and classroom teachers. The goal of the project is to promote physical and social skills development which transfers into the classroom as cooperative behavior thus enhancing the academic learning environment.Challenging problem solving activities are sequenced so that each year in Project CLIMBERS builds upon the previous year's successes. This provides students with a cumulative effect of improved self image, self confidence, and high aspirations.

The acronym "CLIMBERS" was chosen to represent specific behaviors and attitudes which are emphasized in this program as follows:

Cooperation -This is a fundamental skill necessary for success and happiness throughout life.

Leadership - Each child is capable of leading and needs to test his/her leadership abilities in a safe environment.

Initiative - Children need to experience the benefits of "self starting" as individuals and as contributing members of a group.

Motivation - Nurturing each child's inner drive helps students discover the importance perseverance.

Belief - Belief in oneself as a capable person is fostered through participation in challenging problem solving activities.

Encouragement - Giving and receiving encouragement as an involved group member working towards specific goals enhances feelings of self worth and cooperation.

Respect - Mutual respect and the appreciation of individual differences is learned through the process of group problem solving.

Success - Emphasis is placed on realistic goal setting and making a successful try (best effort) at achieving these goals.
