The concept of goal setting, being mindful of what one is working
towards, is an important one. We introduce the idea in kindergarten
and evolve it each year making more sophisticated. Below are the
guidelines we use with third and fourth graders. These guidelines
apply to any goal: personal, academic etc..
GUIDELINES FOR GOAL SETTING
To be effective, a goal must be:
S.M.A.R.T.
Specific - Clearly stated, one at a time
Measurable - Stated so that it is measurable in time and
quantity.
Achievable - Able to be accomplished with your given abilities.
Relevant - Bring about positive change.
Trackable - You should be able to check your progress toward the
goal.
How To Reach A Goal
1. Know the goal. (long term).
2. Identify steps toward that goal. (short term) (THE PLAN)
3. How long will each step take?
4. When should I start working in order to finish on time?
5. How can I measure my progress?
6. How will I know that I have reached my goal?
Why is this important?
What have I learned from this process?
